According to Olivia, the fans should expect “dread.” And, of course, the Targaryen tension at its peak clearly describes what Olivia called dread.
In this episode, Rhaenyra learned that her younger brother Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) usurped her as ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.
Rhaenyra considered bending the knee to keep the peace among the divided Targaryen family though it was impossible,
And what followed is Rhaenyra engaging his sons Princes Jacaerys (Harry Collett) and Lucerys (Elliot Grihault).
She sends them on a mission to Storm’s End to the other lords of Westeros to see if they’d support her claim to the Iron Throne.
However, the peaceful mission to Storm’s End is interrupted by Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), who happens to be Lucerys’ uncle.
If you remember from the previous episodes, Lucerys infamously took out Aemond’s eye during a childhood brawl..
Aemond threatened to take out Lucerys’ eye to intimidate his nephew and later pursued the young prince on the dragon’s back.
The situation escalated to a dire one when Lucerys’ dragon Arrax blew fire at Aemond’s dragon Vhagar. That angered Vhagar, and it took action immediately.
Vhagar went after Arrax with all her might, killing the dragon and Rhaenyra’s son, Lucerys. His uncle was shocked to see that and shouted, “Vhagar, no. No!”
Lucerys’ death was a great motivation for his mother’s decision to fight to regain her throne, which confirmed the bloody Targaryen civil war (the Dance of the Dragons).
Besides, this bloody death of Lucerys also indicated that no member of the Targaryen family was safe; they were all at risk.
It was also a great blow to us, the fans, who are great fans of this young prince, and seeing him go was something not so sweet to behold.
So, what next for the House of the Dragon? Many anticipate the second season in this finale, and HBO has already renewed it.
